Here we have Alain Robbe-Grillet directing Anicee Alvina in the remarkable SLOW SLIDINGS OF PLEASURE (1974). The talented Alvina, who sadly passed away after a fight with Cancer just this past December, would also work on Grillet's slightly less interesting but still vital PLAYING WITH FIRE (1975) opposite Jean-Louis Trintignant and Sylvia Kristel. See also Michel Butor, Claude Simon, Marguerite Duras, Roland Barthes, and Nathalie Sarraute. The wave of experimentalism has been important mainly in France, but also Kafka, William Faulkner, Samuel Beckett, Virginia Woolf, Pirandello, and James Joyce among others have paved way for the literary movement. Later echoes of the anti-novel has been seen in the works of Uwe Johnson in Germany, Susan Sontag in America, Christine Brooke-Rose, and Rayner Heppenstall in England

PARIS: Alain Robbe-Grillet, an avant-garde author and filmmaker who dispensed with conventional storytelling as a pioneer of the postwar "new novel" movement in France, died early Monday, hospital officials said. He was 85. Robbe-Grillet died at Caen University Hospital in western France, where he had been admitted over the weekend for cardiac problems, the officials said.

He was among the most prominent of France's "new novelists" that emerged in the 1950s, including Nobel Prize laureate Claude Simon, Michel Butor and Nathalie Sarraute. The group's experimental works tossed aside traditional literary conventions like plot and character development, narrative and chronology, chapters and punctuation.

The "new novelists" in France linked up with other traditions, with patterns from poetry and the visual arts and with forerunners such as Faulkner and Proust. Their prose works had the appearance of linguistic montages or collages. They took place in the dimensions of memory and the apparently arbitrary or free association. A trained agronomist, Robbe-Grillet in the 1940s "suddenly" felt drawn to writing, he explained years later. He wanted to tell a story "beyond the norm, in which the hero struggles within unhinged space and time."

Alain Robbe-Grillet: Leading 'new novelist' and film-maker who through his work sought to undo the conventions of fiction

The creation of the nouveau roman, or "new novel", in the 1950s was the intellectual event in France of those years. The five or six writers who helped in it were never a school, but they thought alike in wanting to do away with the wearier conventions of the realist novel. Out went the familiar comforts of a logical plot and distinctive, "believable" characters.

Many novel-readers were not at all taken with this ascetic programme and they were taken least of all with the brash pronouncements of the most hard-boiled of all the new novelists, Alain Robbe-Grillet. He had come to literature, unusually, from mathematics and the hard sciences; and rather than perpetuate it, his declared intention was at long last to bury it.

Robbet-Grillet came to be known in France as the "pope of the new novel". It was a title that he adored – and loved to play with. When he was elected to the Académie française in March 2005, he asked to be excused the green uniform, cocked-hat and ceremonial sword. Clergymen were excused, he pointed out, and he was the "pape du nouveau roman"... [John Sturrock, The Indenpendent, Tuesday, 19 February 2008]
