Η Γαλλίδα συγγραφέας (θεατρική συγγραφέας, σεναριογράφος και σκηνοθέτρια) Marguerite Duras, γνωστή διεθνώς για τα σενάριά της Hiroshima mon amour (1959, που σκηνοθέτησε ο Alain Resnais.) και India Song (1975) και νικήτρια του βραβείου Prix Goncourt για το μυθιστόρημά της L'Amant (1984 - The Lover, ταινία, 1992), γεννήθηκε σαν σήμερα 4 Απριλίου 1914. Τα παιδικά της χρόνια τα πέρασε στην Ινδοκίνα και στα 17 της χρόνια πήγε να εγκατασταθεί στο Παρίσι, όπου και σπούδασε νομικά και πολιτικές επιστήμες. Κατά τη διάρκεια της γερμανικής κατοχής, πήρε μέρος στην αντίσταση, όπως επίσης και ο σύζυγός της, ο Robert Antelme, ο οποίος συνελήφθη από την Γκεστάπο και στάλθηκε στο στρατόπεδο συγκέντρωσης, στο Νταχάου. Το 1944 η Duras προσχώρησε στο Κομμουνιστικό Κόμμα, αλλά το 1950 αποχώρησε διαμαρτυρόμενη για την κακομεταχείριση των πνευματικών ανθρώπων στην τότε Σοβιετική Ένωση.
